Sustainability

Thurlestone Hotel’s Environmental and Social Responsibility Policy

As a family friendly 4 star hotel situated on South Devon’s stunning coast, we believe that we must do everything possible to reduce the negative impact we have on the environment, without compromising the holiday experience of our guests.

At the Thurlestone Hotel we are committed to providing a good high quality service and we geninuely care about the local area and environment.  We have adopted many special procedures to minimise the environmental impact of our activities, improve our management of water, energy conservation and recycling of waste.  In addition we make special efforts to source our produce and services locally to support the South Devon economy.

A symbol of this commitment is our membership of the Green Tourism Business Scheme.  The scheme provides accreditation and encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.  By encouraging sustainable practices the scheme ensures the continued enjoyment of the environment around us for future generations.

Some of the main steps in order to reduce our impact are:

  • We continually seek to improve our environment and social performance.
  • We reduce pollution, emissions and waste wherever possible with monitoring and control of heat, light, power.
  • We train, encourage and support employees to value and participate in sustainable business practices.
  • We expect similar environmental standards from suppliers and contractors we use.
  • We encourage, inform and assist visitors to reduce their impact on the environment both here at the Thurlestone Hotel and when they leave .
  • We work closely with the local community and Support of Local Charities & Groups.
  • We are members of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (Silver Award) as an ongoing commitment to sustainable practices and tourism.

Here at Thurlestone we have our own Green Team, members of staff from all our departments, whose goal it is to ensure we are doing all that is possible to ensure our commitment to the environment and to you, our guests.

The signature of the Green team confirms our commitment to monitor and minimise our business impact on our environment.

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle  In Devon we recycle! You can help us by refusing packaging and bags you don’t need, and by using the recycling banks you will find in many places across the county. And if you can recycle where you are staying – please do. We are able to offer facilities for the recycling of many products at Thurlestone.

Give the car a rest!  Walking, cycling and riding are great ways to see the area without adding to traffic. Use public transport if you need to travel to a start point, but you could also try exploring near to where you are staying – there are some fantastic places to see right on the doorstop.  Eco Taxis, local bus services and train information all available from reception if you wish to travel further afield – please ask.

Chill Out and Switch Off!  You can see the stars at night in Devon. Help us reduce light pollution, energy usage and CO2 emissions. Please switch off lights and standby buttons when you don’t need them and by closing windows when the heating is on or turn down as necessary.  Also help us to reduce water consumption by using just the water you need, don’t leave the tap running when brushing teeth and take note of our clean towel policy. Then you can just relax and enjoy the view!
