Situated on the edge of Dartmoor, half an hour from Thurlestone, Buckfastleigh offers something for all the family. As one of Devon’s market towns, a Farmers market is held each Thursday and there is a small array of shops to explore.
Buckfast Abbey is a popular attraction, a working monastery where a community of Benedictine monks live self-sufficiently. The abbey welcomes visitors from all around the world and is famous for its Tonic Wine!
For the younger ones there is a chance to get up close with the animals at Pennywell Farm where children can feed the lambs and cuddle the miniature piglets. There is also the Butterfly Farm and Otter Sanctuary, where you can enjoy learning about tropical butterflies and join in the fun feeding the otters with their keeper, who is on hand to answer questions.
An all-weather attraction for all the family is the South Devon Railway. Built in 1872, the steam train puffs its way through the beautiful countryside on a journey to Totnes and is the longest established steam railway in the south west. This year they are celebrating 50 years and have many events and attractions planned.
A visit to the Valiant Soldier Inn is a unique experience! A pub that closed in the 1960's creating a time warp within its walls. It had been a village inn for more than two centuries. but when it closed furniture and pub artefacts were simply left where they stood as the last customer walked out. Everything dates back to the 1940's and 1950's, when nothing was ever thrown away!
Buckfastleigh also has plenty of walks with stunning scenery including the tranquil River Dart with secluded spots that make the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing picnic or dip in the river.
