Thurlestone Hotel Hosts RNLI Fundraising Launch for New Salcombe Lifeboat

Thurlestone Hotel Hosts RNLI Fundraising Launch for New Salcombe Lifeboat

On Friday, Thurlestone Hotel was delighted to host a special RNLI luncheon, marking the official launch of fundraising efforts for a new state-of-the-art lifeboat for Salcombe.

Set against the stunning South Devon coastline, the event welcomed a distinguished group of guests, including Guest of Honour Sir Tim Lawrence, alongside RNLI supporters, local business leaders, and members of the South Hams community. The gathering provided an important platform to highlight the vital and evolving role of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in saving lives at sea.

Supporting Lifesaving Services in Salcombe

As demand for RNLI services continues to grow, driven by changing patterns in coastal and water use, the organisation is adapting to ensure it can respond safely and effectively. As part of this ongoing development, Salcombe has been selected to receive a brand-new Shannon Class All-Weather Lifeboat, scheduled to arrive in 2027.

The new vessel, The Baltic Exchange IV, will operate alongside the existing Inshore Lifeboat (ILB), creating a highly capable and responsive search and rescue service for the South Hams area. Designed specifically for the RNLI, the Shannon Class lifeboat offers exceptional performance, agility, and durability, making it particularly well-suited to challenging conditions such as navigating breaking bars and the dynamic coastal waters around Salcombe.

A Community Effort

RNLI crews are already undertaking specialist training in preparation for the arrival of the new lifeboat, while fundraising teams have launched an ambitious 18-month campaign. Working in partnership with The Baltic Exchange, local businesses, and the wider community, the campaign aims to raise significant funds to support this essential investment in lifesaving capability.

The luncheon at Thurlestone Hotel highlighted the strength of community spirit across South Devon and the shared commitment to supporting the RNLI’s mission.

Thurlestone Hotel’s Commitment to the Community

Daniel Thompson FIH, General Manager of Thurlestone Hotel, commented:

“It was a privilege to host the RNLI and support the launch of this important fundraising campaign, particularly in a year when we are celebrating 130 years of family ownership at Thurlestone Hotel. The work carried out by RNLI crews is nothing short of extraordinary, and as a coastal community we understand just how vital their service is. We are proud to play a small part in helping ensure Salcombe’s crews are equipped with the very best lifeboat to continue saving lives.”
